Design Challenges

Ready to put your creativity to the test? try one of these challenges!

NEW – Added January 2026!

🗂️ STAY ORGANIZED!

Not all challenges are about making new games. Sometimes the most important skill is staying organized.

When you first create something in Bloxels, it starts as “Untitled.” That can make it tricky to find your games, characters, or artwork later. Giving everything a name — even a temporary one — helps you keep track of your creations and find them again quickly.

Over time, your workshop can fill up with things you no longer need. Too much clutter can make it harder to focus on your best work. If you are 100% sure you won’t come back to something, you may choose to delete it — but be careful! Once something is deleted, it’s gone forever. Only delete things that were mistakes or truly unnecessary.

Your challenge is to take a short break from building and spend some time renaming your creations and cleaning up your workshop. A tidy workshop makes creating even more fun!

Template Design Challenge: Top Down Template 3-A

Templates in Bloxels give you a head start with a ready-made level to customize. Instead of building everything from scratch, you get a basic layout so you can focus on making the game your own with characters, enemies, items, and story.

Bloxels has templates for both platformer and top-down games. Some templates are simple and undecorated, while others are already filled with details to spark ideas.

For this challenge, you’ll use Top Down Template 3-A, the undecorated version of a top-down game. Start by adding your own theme, characters, and obstacles. Then think about how the player will explore the level. Are there puzzles to solve? Enemies to defeat? Secrets to discover?

Your goal is to turn a basic template into a unique top-down adventure that feels completely your own.

Wonderful Winter Holidays

Create a game that celebrates the fun and magic of winter holidays!

Choose between a platformer or top-down game. Then design your game with snow-covered landscapes, holiday decorations, and festive characters. Maybe the player is delivering gifts, building a snowman, or helping save the holidays from a mischievous villain.

Use your imagination to bring the season to life and create an exciting adventure for players to enjoy!

My First Platformer

If you haven’t built your first platformer yet, now’s the perfect time!

Head into the Game Builder, choose Platformer, and start creating. Use the 8 block types, decorate your scenes, and design characters to bring your game to life. Take your time! The goal is to make a fun, playable game, not the fastest one you can finish. Have fun experimenting!

Creepy, Spooky, Scary

It’s the season of scares!

October is all about creating the spookiest, creepiest games you can imagine. Use haunted castles, graveyards, monsters, or whatever creepy ideas you can dream up. Look at the examples below for inspiration, then create your own chilling masterpiece. Can you make a game that gives players goosebumps?

My First/Best Top Down Game

Ready to level up?

If you’ve mastered platformers, it’s time to try a Top-Down Game. This style lets players move in all four directions, explore dungeons, or battle enemies from above. Think about what makes a top-down game feel different from a platformer:

Viewpoint: players see from overhead.

Movement: characters can move up, down, left, and right.

Gameplay: combat, puzzles, and exploration all work differently.

Now it’s your turn! Build your first (or best yet!) top-down game and show us what you’ve got.
